MICROTOPIA
Christmas Showtime 2014
Curated by Kingsgate Studios’ artists:
Naori Priestly - mixed media artist &
Theresa Pateman –artist-printmaker.
Last year's open exhibition of miniature 2 & 3 Dimensional work in any medium was broadened to accept works of a larger size. We still love small things, but we welcome the other sizes too
for this seasonal show.
Microtopia reflects an interior world - as artists choose to see it; revealing their visions of an imagined Microcosmic, Utopian world.
The Exhibition
As well as accepting larger pieces and Products like jewellery, Hand made cards/books - we also had another category for the artist to get their teeth into: The Palace of Microtopia, a large wall mural with window apertures for the work to be displayed in. We suggested to the artists it could be reflective of life in the interior of the Palace or beyond to a garden or landscape, filled with architecture, or something abstract.
Part of the inspiration for this comes from a current showing of Durer's Triumphal Arch in the British Museum, where 192 wood engravings make up a massive arch commissioned by Emperor Maximillian in 1515. The resulting image is a combination of the Royal Family Tree and a glimpse into the sixteenth century.
